Centenary Spotlight: Avon Crocker
This week’s Centenary Spotlight is on Avon Crocker. Avon has been a member of Centenary since 1986. She sings in the choir, is a member of the Upper Room Sunday School class, and is chair of the Bereavement Committee.
The Bereavement Committee offers a luncheon to member families following funeral/memorial services and is held in the Family Life Center. When a meal is requested, Avon is the one who makes it happen. She jokingly says this is the only “on call” committee the church has. With only 2-3 days notice to put a meal together, it is her job to enlist people to help cook, serve or provide a dish for the meal. Avon says it’s a team effort, noting that she can always count on Tina Johnson to provide her specialty, “Tina’s Taters”. The importance of bereavement meals are something that may be overlooked, but food has the ability to touch the soul, and sitting down for a meal surrounded by friends and family to help with grieving can be healing. Putting together a meal on short notice can be a bit stressful, but Avon takes the call to help those who are grieving.
She also assists with the Wednesday night Community Meals. She enjoys meeting and sharing a meal with people from the community whom she might never meet otherwise. For many years, she has been involved with FISH Volunteers of Cape Girardeau, better known
as the FISH Food Pantry. She is currently President of the FISH Board of Directors. While FISH is not associated with Centenary, Centenary has been donating food to the pantry for over 40 years. Thank you Avon for all that you do for Centenary!
