Centenary Spotlight: Margaret Lents
For this week’s Centenary Spotlight, we are highlighting the amazing volunteerism of Margaret Lents. Margaret is in charge of our Casserole Ministry and our Wednesday Night Meals. Margaret’s work as a kitchen volunteer are invaluable to not only outreach and in-reach within Centenary, but also as a service to our community.
Margaret felt called to give through food after surviving cancer. Margaret founded the Casserole Ministry 20 years ago along with Terry Crowell and Jo Wikel. The Casserole Ministry makes free meals for those who are sick, grieving, or otherwise going through a life change and need help, in or out of Centenary. Centenary members can buy these casseroles for only $3, and all profits go to funding our Wednesday Night Meals.
Our Wednesday Night Meals have been taking place for 16 years. Margaret noticed a need in the community for free meals. It’s a great opportunity for fellowship, and it is a godsend for those who are in need. Margaret also gives a sermon during the meal and prays before and after every meal. Margaret is very grateful for the volunteers who help every week, Shirley Waterman, Dr. Tim Talbert, Avon Crocker, Bev Hahs, Judi Graham, Mary Twidwell, Ellen, Jackie and David Otto, and many more.
Margaret is very passionate about her ministry. Even when COVID shut down the world, Margaret continued the weekly meals by making sack lunches and giving them out via drive-thru. Even when weather is bad, she will do anything to continue the weekly meals unless it is absolutely necessary to cancel. “I’ll crawl if I have to.”
“It’s just as much of a blessing for me as it is for them,” said Margaret. “It’s not just food, it’s fellowship.” Thank you Margaret for the unwavering work you do for the Lord! And a huge thank you to everyone in the Kitchen Team who go above and beyond to serve our church and our community.
If you want to assist on Wednesday Night meals or the Casserole Ministry, you are welcome! We accept walk-ins, but if you would like to reach out to Margaret you can email her at lentsm@yahoo.com.
