Centenary Spotlight: Mel Gilhaus

mel Gilhaus CS

This week’s Centenary Spotlight is on Mel Gilhaus. Mel is a retired Cape Central music teacher and has been a member along with his wife Annabel since 1964. Mel is a gifted musician and has used his gift to lift up our church in many ways. He sang in the choir until 1975, when there was a need for him to assist with sound design. He then was in charge of audio for our services for 41 years. Mel not only ran the audio every Sunday; he also helped install audio and video equipment, like our two drop-down microphones over the choir loft. He says he “has explored every inch of this building.” Mel would also record our services and stay after service to make copies on cassette to be delivered to those who were homebound, before the time of the internet.

Mel was part of a string quartet that would play Christian pieces during offering or for special services. This quartet gifted their talents to Centenary for fifteen years and played Handel’s Messiah among other sacred pieces. He was also the chairman for the Board of Trustees, the Interim Building Superintendent for a brief period, and is currently a member of our Thursday Morning Men’s Bible Study. Mel still to this day plays violin for us and assists with audio needs. We are grateful for all Mel has done for us and continues to do!
